Started in the year 2005, it is now an annual event and this year it was held on the 26th August, 2009. Great Lakes Institute of Management, a nationally proclaimed Management Institute celebrated SWIM (Successful Women in Management). SWIM is an initiative mooted by the students of Great Lakes Institute of Management to empower women with traits to assume leadership roles in the corporate world. The SWIM community, initiated in 2005, works towards identifying and drawing inspiration from successful women from various walks of life.

The day-long event organised at Hotel Green Park on Tuesday was presided by Ms. Anu Aga, former chairperson of Thermax. Padmasri Sudha Raghunathan, Noted Carnatic Vocalist, Ms. Mridula Ramesh of Sundaram Textiles and Ms. Hemu Ramaiah, founder of Landmark enlightened the audience on 'Women as Trailblazers: Dreaming, Exploring and Discovering new horizons’.

The distinguished guests discussed at length about the success, women have achieved in the field of management and aspired to achieve greater heights. Ms. Anu Aga in her opening speech said that it was important to balance professional responsibilities and personal life and emphasized on Vipasana which is the art of living. Ms. Sudha Raghunathan talked about her journey to becoming a maestro in classical music. She discussed the challenges faced during her journey, and how she won over them. Ms. Hemu Ramaiah opined that it is important to think out of the box to reach “the other side” and achieve success. She elaborated on the lessons learnt in running an entrepreneurial venture. According to her, entrepreneurs must plan when to start and exit a business plan. Ms. Mridula Ramesh talked about four success enablers for women, namely role models, proving early competence in a language known by competitors, courage, and family support.

The event also had a panel discussion on the topic – ‘Educated, Intelligent, Energetic and Just in her forties – can she still pursue her career dreams?’ The discussion was moderated by Mr. T. N. Seshan, former CEC of India. The panel included Ms. Pushpa Kandaswamy, Noted TV producer, Ms. Indra Subramanyam, MD, Ehrlich Lab, Ms. Lalitha Maheswaran, HR Consultant and Ms. Sarda Ramani, president of C I Global Solutions. Mr. Seshan introduced the theme, and enraptured the audience with his characteristic witty remarks throughout the discussion. Ms. Indra Subramanyam stated that desire is what takes women towards their goals. She also said that for a country to prosper, men and women must work together without compromising on domestic life. Ms. Pushpa Kandaswamy said that relations were more important than numbers. She vehemently supported the theme and emphasized that women are adaptable, efficient and capable of multi tasking. According to Ms. Sarda, determination and grit are important and even if one were to take a break in professional life, one can still get back as and when one feels like, and make the best out of it. Ms. Lalitha, a visiting faculty at Great Lakes, addressed the women in the audience and advised them to define success for themselves, and not neglect their own selves. She said every decision taken will have its own consequences, it is important to make a choice and live by it. This was followed by an open house session where the audience, comprising of the distinguished guests, students and faculty, posed a variety of questions related to women’s lives and their career orientation.

Founder and Honorary Dean of Great Lakes, Dr. Bala V. Balachandran and Executive Director of PGPM Great Lakes Prof. S. Sriram were also present on the occasion. Dr. Bala V. Balachandran in his address spoke about the need for women to pursue their dreams in spite of obstacles on their path.

Les Quizerables – The Quiz competition between various Corporates and colleges was also a part of SWIM 2008. The quiz was a great success with a total of 46 teams registering for Les Quizerables. The teams were from top corporates like TCS, Cognizant, Citibank, HP, I-flex, KPMG, IRENVA, Frost and Sullivaan, Abacus and Aura. The quiz also had enthusiastic students from IIT, Madras, Anna University, SIIB, Pune, IFMR, SVCE, MOP, SRMEC and MNM Jain.

The total prize money was Rs. 35000. The first prize was won by team Sumo comprising of Saranya Jayakumar, Rajen Prabhu and Kiran Vijaykumar.

The quiz was conducted by Mr. Vinod Ganesh. Vinod Ganesh has conducted the annual 'QFI Open Quiz' for the last four years and the 'Infosys Corporate Quiz' in 2006. He is an passionate quizzer and has won multitudes of quizzes all over the country. A regular finalist at the Landmark Quiz and the Odyssey Quiz, he has won Lone Wolf quizzes at IIT Madras' Saarang, REC Trichy's Festember and has also won the annual Grandmaster quiz at the Quiz Foundation of India, Chennai.

It may be true that men are from Mars and women are from Venus but August 25th 2007 was all about bringing both sexes down to the same planet. The SWIM (Successful Women in Management) event, an inspiring initiative by the Great Lakes Institute of Management showcased the need for equality between men and women. The support of our Hon. Dean Uncle Bala and an enthusiastic SWIM team ensured that the show was more than a huge success. The second edition of this initiative, SWIM 2007-2008 was held amidst much fanfare at the Tidel Park Auditorium, Chennai on 25th Aug 2007.

The theme for this year’s event was
“The New Age Woman: Redefining Power, Success and Compassion” and the tagline
“The hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world” was apt for the event.

After the traditional invocation and lighting the lamp, the event was kicked off by Uncle Bala’s welcome address. A tribute to Uncle’s Mother, Mother Teresa and Mata Amritanandamayi were highlights of his address. They were the people who inspired Uncle to start SWIM.

    Dr. Kiran Bedi was the keynote speaker and this was no surprise. She symbolized the strength and courage of women that is still largely untapped in India. Her passion to communicate the importance of leadership to the soon-to-be MBA graduates was simply inspiring. Dr Bedi told the next generation business leaders that women must aspire to acquire the 3M’s (muscle, mobility, and money) of men and nurture their own three H’s (Humanity, Healing touch and Compassionate heart) in order to be equal to men if not surpass them in today’s society. Apart from Dr. Kiran Bedi, we also had power talks by eminent women personalities including Mallika Srinivasan, Director, TAFE, Jeyashree Ravi, proprietor, Palam Silks and Ms. Indra Subramanyam, Managing Director of Ehlrich Laboratories, Chennai. They epitomized the fact that the true woman of substance was here to stay. Ms. Mallika Srinivasan had inaugurated the SWIM initiative of Great Lakes in 1995 and has been actively associated with it ever since. We also had with us, Padma Shri Dr. Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty who along with his family has been a staunch pillar of support to the Great Lakes Family since its beginning.

The SWIM magazine was also released during the event by our four guests of honour. The magazine created in line with the SWIM theme, contains articles by successful women from various walks of life including Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chanda Kochchar, Mrinalini Sarabhai among others.

Lunch was followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion which focused on the theme “Women – How free? How Equal?” moderated by Mr Kiruba Shankar. Kiruba is India’s No. 1 Blogger and a celebrity in his own right. He hosts the “Kiruba Show” a podcast with interviews of eminent personalities. Ms. Susmita Dasgupta – Assistant Vice President, Asipac, Bangalore.
Ms. Asha Mathen – Regional Head & Vice President – South and East, Deutsche Bank.

With tremendous participation from the audience, their thoughts brought a whole new perspective to the idea of a truly free and equal woman.

The need for self-confidence, work-life balance, emotional strength, dedication and the constant hunger for success were some of the key highlights of the discussion. Ms Asha Mathen made an assertive point that while a woman has to work doubly hard to make a mark in today’s corporate world; performance is what makes the difference irrespective of gender. The discussion ended on a contemplative note with speakers agreeing that despite the significant strides taken in the race to reach “equality” with their male counterparts, women today have to work doubly harder to sustain the work done by women generations before them.

The much awaited quiz conducted by “The Landmark Quiz” Quizmaster Dr. Navin Jayakumar was the other crowd-puller for the day. The six teams qualifying for the finals put on a great show as they battled it out in a four-round quiz special focussing on Women. With prizes worth Rs 20,000 for the winning team and Rs 15,000 for the runner-up the stakes were quite high! Team “Citi citi bank bank” (no prizes for guessing that they represented Citibank) turned out the clear winners. Team “Mahila-pore” from Irevna was runners up.

Overall, the SWIM event was inspiring and entertaining. With powerful and courageous women taking center-stage the event promised much and delivered much more. For all youngsters and aspiring business leaders, especially women the lessons from the SWIM event are obvious. Comparisons between men and women are only for those belonging to the old school of thought.Today, success comes from learning to co-exist harmoniously with each other. More importantly, women must always be one step ahead and strive for excellence along with equality.
